02 — Notes from a Content Engineer's Seat at the Table

There's a big space between the beautiful thing and the buildable thing. A designer may know exactly what an experience should feel like. An engineer may know exactly what the system can do. The difficult work lives in the space between them. By the time engineering discovers a component cannot support the approved design, creative has often spent weeks making something no one wants to revisit. Platform knowledge arrived too late. After years working in various content management systems, I've learned that a CMS doesn't actually limit creativity or box you in. Even when you're building component-based pages. What really holds teams back is uncovering a platform constraint after the design is approved. The more useful approach is to bring platform reality upstream while the idea is still fresh enough to change. In this working model, Design teams define what the experience should look like at meaningful extremes. Engineering defines how it behaves between those states. The last layer is Content Engineering. The work is translating creative intent into content rules and implementation decisions that can survive the real world.
